Colourful Counters

Explore values when combining and partitioning numbers

An exploration tool ideal for modelling the composition of numbers, addition and number facts.

Learning Objectives:

• EYFS: Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number
• Y1: Represent and use number bonds [and related subtraction] facts within 20
• Y2: Solve problems with addition [and subtraction] using concrete objects and pictorial representations
• Y2: show that addition of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative)

Instructions:

1. Drag on new counters from the dispenser.
2. Drag one counter over another to add them together.
3. Make copies of the last counter that you pressed.
4. Split counters into smaller amounts by pressing on the counter then pressing on 'split'
5. (Colours change to a factor from the dispenser).
6. (Primes greater than 5 are red as they're divisible by 1).
7. Units, tens and hundreds can be split; thousands will not.
