Ghost Ship Spelling
Spelling for Years 3 & 4 on a ghost ship theme. Spell the root word and then the whole word.
Learning Objectives:
- Content of this game is taken from English programmes of study: Key Stage 2 National curriculum in England: Appendix List 1 Spelling – work for years 3 and 4
- Pupils should be taught to apply their growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes (etymology and morphology) as listed in English Appendix 1, both to read aloud and to understand
the meaning of new words they meet.
Instructions:
- Your aim is to free the trapped ghosts by correctly spelling the words.
- Turn the dial to choose a rule to practise, (rules are displayed in the same order as Appendix List 1).
- If the rule you have chosen relates to suffixes/prefixes your rounds will be split into spelling the root word and then the whole word.
- Read the word shown on the barrel; it will be chunked into syllables.
- Click on a barrel to send them all off.
- Now make the same word using the barrels provided, (one syllable at a time).
- Once you have correctly made the word the barrels will disappear.
- Now make the same word using individual letters (on bottles).
- Once you have correctly spelt 8 words the game is over.
- If you're spelling a root word and then the word with a suffix/prefix you will see the ghost after each word pair is completed.
- Each rule has up to 30 words in the set so it's worth playing the same game again as different words will be used.
Have fun!
