Race To Zero - Cuisenaire

Get to zero as fast as possible. (Taking away with cuisenaire rods.)

Learning Objectives:

  • Y2: To subtract numbers using concrete objects and pictorial representations


  1. Wait a moment for the calculation.
  2. Click on the bottom row of the Cuisenaire rods to see the cutters.
  3. Use the cutters to take away the right amount. (Sometimes you will need to use your number facts to bridge through ten.) The bit taken away (subtrahend) will fall to the floor.
  4. How much is left? Use place value to help you.
  5. If you make a mistake with the cuisenaire rods you can press the undo button. Mistakes with the cuisenaire rods minuend are automatically corrected. The bit taken away (subtrahend) doesn't correct itself if wrong.
  6. You can use the on-screen keypad or your keyboard to type your answer, (not the num pad though, sorry).

Reward screen:
  • 4 minutes and over - Stearman biplane
  • 3 to 4 mins - Supermarine Spitfire
  • 2 mins 30 secs to 3 mins - P51 Mustang
  • 2 to 2 mins 30secs - F18 Hornet
  • 1 to 2 mins - Red Arrows Hawk
  • 1 min or less - B1 Stealth Bomber
