Rounding Rollercoaster:
An introduction to rounding (on a rollercoaster theme).
Age: 8+yrs
Learning Objectives:
- Year 3: Pupils connect decimals and rounding to drawing and measuring straight lines in centimetres, in a variety of contexts. (non statutory)
- Year 4: Pupils connect estimation and rounding numbers to the use of measuring instruments. (non statutory)
- Year 5: Pupils use rounding to check answers to calculations and determine, in the context of a problem, levels of accuracy.
- Year 6: Pupils divide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long division, and interpret remainders as whole number remainders, fractions, or by rounding, as appropriate for the context
- Year 6: Pupils can explore and make conjectures about converting a simple fraction to a decimal fraction (for example, 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375). For simple fractions with recurring decimal equivalents, pupils learn about rounding the decimal to three decimal places, or other appropriate approximations depending on the context. (non statutory)
- Year 6: Pupils also develop their skills of rounding and estimating as a means of predicting and checking the order of magnitude of their answers to decimal calculations. This includes rounding answers to a specified degree of accuracy and checking the reasonableness of their answers.
Instructions:
- There are 10 games. The left hand side is broadly Year 3 to 4 and the right hand side is broadly Year 5 & 6.
- The 'Mix It Up' games include a mix of the different levels.
- There are 10 questions.
- Read the question and choose the deciding digit. - The roller coaster moves to your answer.
- Now decide, are you going to round up or down? - Press on an arrow.
- Once the rollercoaster has moved to the end/start then choose what the rounded number will be.
- After 10 goes there's a fun animation
- There's also the occasional sassy rollercoaster guest! They just look at you.
- You can check which questions you answered or got wrong by pressing on the progress circles on the LHS.
